The Ziatype process is a variation on palladium printing that builds on the history of Pt/Pd printing with the biggest difference being the use of complex lithium palladium salts. Lithium palladium chloride and ferric ammonium oxalate are the primary catalysts. The process offers several advantages over traditional platinum/palladium printing. Zia is accessible, user friendly, and is flexible and open to individual invention. The lithium palladium salts result in what is known as a POP or “printing out process” that may be assessed using visual inspection during exposure and yields a print displaying the values of a fully developed image without the need for a developer. Both contrast and color can be controlled by altering drop count ratios of the chemistry used in the sensitized coating applied to a base of fine art paper. Humidity also plays a key role. Coating is done in a dim room and exposure may be made using sunlight or a UV unit. The resulting images are extremely stable and the possibilities for variation are virtually unlimited. Ziatype is a good introductory process if you are looking for a neutral black without the use of platinum or before to stepping up into straight platinum/palladium printing which presents higher levels of difficulty. Here is a summary of the advantages of Ziatype process over pure Platinum/palladium:

Designed for: Those who want to delve deeper into this experimental palladium printing technique with the convenience of a POP process.

Admission requirements: Basic knowledge of experimental techniques is recommended.

Price: 250 euros.

Duration: 3 sessions, each one lasting 2 hours.

Modality: Live-online with the artist.

Language: English.

Start dates: To be decided by everyone when there are 4 pre-registered participants. The class will be on a weekday from 6 to 9 pm (Spanish time).

What's included:

• Unlimited access to all content of live and pre-recorded classes (workshops, conferences and additional downloadable materials) for life. • Be a member of the Ágora Community: participate for free in our monthly Online Meetings (October 23, November 20, January 29, February 26, March 19, April 30 and May 21) and show your work in our social networks. • Access the exclusive Ágora Community group on WhatsApp with exclusive discounts, direct access to teachers and the Ágora team, monthly information, special content.

Necessary materials:

Program:

Session 1 Introduction to Ziatype
  • Materials:

We will first make sure that everyone knows how to make a good digital negative. We will discuss what constitutes an appropriate negative for this process and a custom curve will be applied. This will be followed by a live demonstration of Ziatype, which is a palladium-based printing process.

Session 2 Ziatype and Contrast Management
  • Materials:

We will discuss color and contrast control using chemistry. With Ziatyoe it is possible to work with existing negatives while using chemical variations to control contrast. With the addition of gold chloride and sodium tungstate, color may be “dialed” in, resulting in warm or cool tones, or even images displaying split tones.

Session 3 Creating Ziatypes
  • Materials:

Participants will practice the Ziatype technique with all the tools given during the weeks leading up to it. A small series will be created and there will be trouble shooting and gentle critique.

Here is a summary of the advantages of Ziatype process over pure Platinum/palladium:

  • A printing out system. Images can be evaluated as they print. In most cases the first print will be successful. Far fewer underexposed or overexposed prints.

  • Greater contrast control without graining. Normal silver negatives made for printing on No. 2 grade paper can be printed.

  • Greater paper acceptance. It tends not to be finicky and prints well on most papers.

  • Greater color control. You can "dial in" various shades of brown and red brown, purple and gray.

  • Faster printing speed. As much as 3 stops in some cases.

  • No developer needed.

  • Cold neutral black color with pure palladium. The elegance of a Frederick Evans print with palladium.

  • Good Dmax without the use of platinum.
