In this course we are going to address some manual photographic printing techniques and also image taking. Copying techniques allow paper and other surfaces to be covered with different sensitive materials to obtain images on them through the action of light on the applied chemicals. The light-sensitive cover is prepared by hand and applied to different supports to then copy images by contact. You can work with images obtained with any camera, frames, drawings. In the case of the photographic taking technique that we will see, we will also apply a light-sensitive coating to a support that will then go inside a camera to obtain images.
All of the above makes these procedures very versatile when working on different photographic projects and expanding creative possibilities. Each session will deal with a new technique with pre-recorded materials and documentation that will lead us to discover the processes with which photography began. The processes that we will be addressing are: wet collodion, argyrotype, kallitype and dichromated gum.

WET COLLODION and Glass Negatives
Wet collodion is a photography technique that was invented in 1851. With this method, we can make negative shots on glass or metal covered with a layer of salted collodion to be immediately sensitized with a silver nitrate solution. The entire procedure must be done in a short time before the components dry out. Negatives obtained on glass can be painted black to create a positive (ambrotype) or used to make contact prints in various techniques.

ARGYROTYPE (New Argentotype)
Dr Mike Ware's variation of the argentotype was invented by Sir John Herschel in the 19th century. We will use silver oxide, sulfamic acid and ammonia ferric citrate to create a single sensitizing solution. The copies obtained have a great richness in the tones and depth in the shadows.

KALLITYPE and Iron Techniques
This is another of the iron-silver techniques that is often confused with Van Dyke Brown. We will combine two solutions to prepare the sensitizer: silver nitrate and ferric oxalate. After exposure to light, a development process will need to be carried out that, depending on the materials used to prepare it, will make the print take on different shades.

PIGMENTED TECHNIQUES: Gum Bichromated, Monochrome in Colour and Trichromy
Gum Bichromated printing allows images to be copied on paper, cloth, ceramics and other surfaces. You can work in several layers, which allows you to make colour copies. It consists of copying a negative by contact on a surface that has been previously sensitized with gum arabic and potassium bichromate.

Admission Requirements: Basic knowledge of analog photography.
Objectives: Go deeper into an area of experimental photography, guided by specialist teachers.

Photographer, Visual Arts Teacher, and Ceramics Technician. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She trained in the city of Tandil at IPAT and the School of Ceramics. Upon completing her studies, she became interested in 19th-century photographic techniques and began to research and experiment with them. Currently, she coordinates workshops on experimental photography and alternative photographic processes in her virtual space "Superficies Sensibles" and at the Ágora del ExpFestival. Since 2023, she has been the director of the artistic residency at the Experimental Photo Festival (Barcelona). She has held several solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in her country. She has also participated in group exhibitions and festivals in Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Spain. She has published the mini-books "MADER" (2014), "El Cuerpo Roto" (2019), and "Las Vías de Escape" (2020). Her work mainly addresses autobiography, self-portraiture, the editing of photographic zines, storytelling through images about the body and illness, family ties, as well as experimentation with materiality, media, and various techniques without limiting herself to ancient processes.
