Photobooks and Photozines with Stéphanie Probst
What is a book or a zine? How many pages do you need? What kind of paper should you use? What size should you choose? How many copies do you want? Are you aiming to create a catalogue or a zine? Would you like to share your work, tell a story, spread ideas, or illustrate a concept? Do you just want to have fun and shape your pictures in real life? In this class, you will receive advice and view examples of photobooks and photozines, ranging from simple copy machine zines to unique photographic objects. First, a theoretical/historical introduction will provide you with essential context. Then, you will examine diverse examples of photobooks to inspire you and expand your imagination regarding the form of a book. We will discuss layout, editing, and sequencing content to give it a coherent structure. Various methods of folding, binding, and sewing will be demonstrated. We will discuss how choices should be made to ensure the form complements the content. Shaping a book can be simple or elaborate, as long as it aligns with the overall vision..
