Wicked Arts Assignments are bold, unusual, whimsical, funny, poetic, inspiring, socially engaging or otherwise challenging art assignments. Anyone who teaches art classes knows them: one of those assignments that is seemingly simple, but that challenges participants, students and pupils to the max. Many artists, musicians, theater makers, dancers and art teachers have that one favorite, often-used assignment that brings everything together: artistic vision, pedagogical approach and love for certain techniques or methods. The nearly one hundred art assignments collected here connect to visual art, performance, theater, music, dance and design, but more importantly, they encourage interdisciplinarity. They reflect themes, practices and concepts from the contemporary arts and offer opportunities to think about ourselves, art and the world differently.The first part of this book provides insight into art commissions from historical, artistic and educational perspectives, supplemented by interviews with experts in contemporary art and education. The second part constitutes the relevant collection of art assignments, provided with an explanation and original elaborations in pictures. The assignments can be carried out in different contexts: from elementary schools to higher education, from home to the (online) community, and from Bogotá to Istanbul. They are intended to stimulate the imaginations of both teachers and students and prompt new, urgent educational and artistic practices.
