Ubi sunt

Fiuza, Juan Manuel

Ubi sunt is a photographic project where archives from various sources (family albums, publications, manuals, and research on astronomy, biology, and esotericism) are interwoven with images from the artist, creating a fictional and poetic mockumentary. The fiction revolves around a character (from the family archive) who, nourished by these materials, symbolisms, texts, and photographs, allows us to explore and develop certain concerns, concepts, and beliefs regarding the literary topic ubi sunt – 'what became of those who came before us' – and the theory of the transmutation of bodies into cosmic matter – 'we are stardust'. Two vectors intersect the project: the intimate and the unspeakable. The first represents what is only revealed in the editing, while the second refers to what escapes language. A project that, in its poetics, does not aspire to reach conclusive truths but rather to connect with the improbable that allows one to bite into fiction.
