When The History of Photography by Hemut and Alison Gernsheim was first published in 1955, it immediately established itself as the standard work on the subject, described by the Financial Times as 'the most important singe historical work in the field.' The first part of this classic book was revised by Professor Gernsheim and published as The Origins of Photography (1982). Now, in The Rise of Photography, he brings the revision of his magnum opus up to 1880.
