Stationen der Moderne
Roters, Eberhard
An exhibition about exhibitions This project is based on the idea that it is not only the works of art themselves that determine cultural developments, but also or more so exhibitions, presentations of works that combine the artists' ideas and statements into an argument and help them to gain public impact. This means that the art exhibitors, gallery owners, museum people and exhibition directors help shape the artistic processes, give them direction and content. Eberhard Roters, founder and first director of the Berlinische Galerie, and his successor Jörn Merkert have been responsible for many important exhibitions in Berlin and elsewhere. Not least, they were both involved in the Sculpture Boulevard exhibition, which drew attention to contemporary Berlin sculpture at the 750th anniversary of Berlin in 1987 and was extended into this year to complement and accompany the program of Berlin as European City of Culture in 1988. In retrospect, this sculpture boulevard may not be included among the epoch-making exhibitions that are themselves the subject of the exhibition here as stations of modernism. And yet this attempt to show exemplary works by important Berlin sculptors for the limited duration of an exhibition in the city's public space and not just in the traditional districts of the art world has brought a new quality to the discussion about art and society with effects that extend beyond Berlin. Eberhard Roters and Bernhard Schulz conceived the exhibition Stations of Modernism as a project of the Berlinische Galerie, whose field of work and collection has been art in Berlin since 1870. Jörn Merkert, together with the museum, took over this exhibition concept from Roters, developed it further together with the exhibition team and steered it through all difficulties. The exhibition proves to be a contribution to the ongoing discussion about modernism; in part it is also a documentation of what Berlin's contribution to 20th century art represents, because many of the works of art had.
