Primal Images

Burchfield, Jerry

In Primal Images, Jerry Burchfield explores the beauty and fragility of the Amazon through a series of lumen prints created without a camera or lens. Fascinated by the rainforest on his first visit in 1998, Burchfield developed a unique method: he placed plant cuttings on aged photographic paper and allowed light, rain, and natural chemistry to act freely. The result is a collection of images ranging from the representational to pure abstraction, capturing the vibrant essence of the world's largest tropical rainforest. Inspired by the pioneering techniques of experimental photography, Burchfield pushes the process further in a near-shamanic quest to reveal nature’s inner worlds. Primal Images is a respectful tribute to the power of the natural world and a testament to art as an act of discovery.
