Polaroid: The Magic Material

Kaps, Florian

Through this book, Florian Kaps, founder of the Impossible Film Project, tells the incredible story of the Polaroid and its decisive contribution to what has been defined as the ‘Instant Renaissance’, recovering this famous photographic medium from the oblivion to which it seemed destined. The story begins with the development of the technique of instant development by the visionary Edwin Land during the 1940s up to its recent epilogue. Through more than 250 Polaroids by artists such as Andy Warhol, Araki and Ansel Adams, the author illustrates how Polaroid has influenced the collective imagination, the visual arts and costume to this day, through the 70 years since its invention. Thanks to the voice of its main interpreter, the book continues with an account of the ‘re-invention’ of instant photography, made possible by the production of the first Impossible Project instant films in 2008, contextualising and analysing the use of instant photography in the 21st century.
