Images Inventees: La Photographie Creative Belge dans les annes 50
Et al.
This exhibition showcases a photographic movement from 1950s Belgium, particularly Brussels and Antwerp, which emerged as a reaction against the aesthetic conformism and pictorialism prevalent at the time. Influenced by Otto Steinert's Subjektive Fotographie, Belgian photographers like Julien Coulommier and Serge Vandercam embraced purely photographic techniques inspired by Bauhaus and New Vision artists, aiming to create personal, abstract images devoid of historical or sociological context. Their work reflects the post-war period's psychological aftermath and the rise of abstract art in Belgium. Organized by Laurence Bosse with support from Jean-Louis Godefroid, this exhibition aims to highlight and rediscover these innovative works and their contribution to photographic art.
