EXP.21 Movement
Experimental Photo Festival
We experiment from diversity, we make sense of what we do, with the comfort of knowing that there are many of us. On a day-to-day basis we are a virtual community, but full of palm trees, sun, and beach once a year: in our house, it is always summer. Our home is a reality that is transforming us, nonconformity has become action and action generates movement. We do not know what the future of photography will be, but now we know that we will find it together. The festival makes visible and shares horizontally the knowledge, experiments, and games that lead us to new discoveries. During this intense year, we have realized that experimenters are hypnotically focused on learning the techniques, but these techniques sometimes go against the game and they are a form of control: you think you control them, but they control you. Now we know that experimentation is a path to the unknown, it is the fire that illuminates the future of photography as a form of a non industrial and free expression. Based on these reflections and with the aim of enriching this shared creative experience, we propose three challenges for this year. The first one invites us to mix all the techniques, to burst out its limits to go back to the beginning and create new techniques from their confluence. Who says it is not possible to make collodion film soup, double exposure solarigraphies, camera-less. Polaroids, pinhole happenings, or cyanotype video? From the moment we control them, the second challenge asks us to leave them all aside, to put them at the service of a message; of a personal, rational, and emotional creation. We must focus on why, what, and how we want to express ourselves. What is there beyond the techniques? What is behind those thousands of images that we see everyday? How do we make sense of an experimental photographic project? Finally, the third one challenges us to leave the inner self, to enter a gathered, assembled we, to think about collective projects; to lose individual control, to embrace the desire of others, and to create from a dialogue. We will never get what we had imagined, we will produce new visual experiences and we will get closer to what we want to be.
