EXP.20 Manifest
Experimental Photo Festival
This manifesto wants to express in words what a series of people think about an artistic form that makes us be who we are. This manifesto talks about our experience with photography, about our loving and tragic approach to its limits. This manifesto is a love letter to those who have allowed themselves to question what photography is to live new visual experiences. This living in the limit of photography is what has allowed us to make sense again and to create new meanings from the limit. This is not just chance and luck, there is also a lot of conscious work because revolutionary experimentation is born by practicing, working, and exercising the technique and also the creativity. The unexpected is born of suspicion, of pushing the known until ignoring it, of experiencing the adventure of the unusual in a visual journey that changes our lives. This nonconformity is circular, it is born with photography, it deepens with the historical avant-garde and now returns with the rebirth of analog photography. Why going back to the past in the middle of the future? Because we don't talk about an aesthetic or a technique or an artistic trend, we talk about an attitude. Why 2020? Because we have been online for ten years and twenty years have passed since the death and rebirth of analog photography. The social networks have brought together two generations of experimenters in transition: analog natives transformed into digital disenchanted photographers and digital natives who are tired of the real world and have begun to look for something different. Many artists, two here, three there, scattered throughout the world with a common language, have discovered ourselves and others during this experience of experimenting. This inter-generational dialogue stems from a new era (the global interconnection of social networks) but also from the shock that occurred within the photographic field along with the digital transition. For us, the experimental is a shared future to the extent that it's not selfishness, it is a shared construction, it is an excuse to give and take, to live a creative experience with others: it is to teach someone else something they do not know and try it together, it is to see them enjoy it like a child with a new toy. Experimenting is experience, it is life and it is gesture, it is nonconformity, it is a searching process that is born from technique and chance, which creates within surprise. Questioning the medium and its rules and playing with its limits, we can reflect on what we do, live and feel when creating an image. Experimental photography is a common language for all of us who believe that, after 170 years of life, photography makes sense in its peripheries.
