This introductory masterclass is essential for anyone looking to delve into the captivating world of analogue photography in the darkroom, offering a standard approach within the realm of experimentation. The course will span three days, with each day consisting of three hours, during which we will cover the fundamental elements and potential alternatives necessary for operating in a black-and-white darkroom.

We will explore both the standard methods and the possibilities for forging one's own path within the realms of analogue and digital photography. It's worth noting that familiarity with the safelight environment not only broadens understanding of the digital realm but also enriches experiences in both mediums. Each day, we will revisit basic concepts multiple times to clarify any doubts and solidify understanding. Given the wealth of information and numerous technical aspects involved, we'll adopt a practical and accessible approach to equip participants with a solid foundation in analogue photography in the darkroom, At the same time, we’ll provide students with the inspiration and knowledge to explore their creativity in this medium. Admission requirements: Basic knowledge of analog photography capture is recommended.

Session 1 Space and Chemistry
  • Materials:

On the first day, we will focus on acquainting participants with the layout of a photographic darkroom, from the bare essentials required for printing to safety protocols and chemical handling. Topics covered will include:

  • Darkroom setup

  • Types of enlargers

  • Safety protocols and chemical handling 

  • Chemical dilution and storage

  • Safe chemical processing procedures 

  • Light control methods

  • Addressing specific questions and scenarios

  • We'll also begin to explore black-and-white chemicals, dilution techniques, purchasing sources, and preferred formulas.

Session 2 Film Development
  • Materials:

On day two, we will concentrate on the film development process, delving into aspects such as:

  • Agitation, time, temperature, and dilution considerations

  • Equipment prerequisites for film development

  • Development protocols for various formats (35 mm, 120, plates)

  • Different chemical solutions and their effects

  • Technical and creative decision-making during development 

  • Addressing specific questions and scenarios

Session 3 Printing Process and Creativity
  • Materials:

On the third day, we will explore the printing process, covering topics such as:

  • Utilisation of enlargers and paper types

  • Creation of test strips

  • Contrast control and exploration of creative and technical elects

  • Advanced techniques like dodging and burning

  • Tailoring the process to individual creative intentions

  • General review, Q&A, and addressing specific scenarios

Naroa Perez

Born in Barcelona in 1978, Naroa Pérez has been delving into the realms of touch, nostalgia, and fear through photography since 2002. Her artistic focus centers on the darkroom and its intricate processes, with a keen interest in procedural elements such as mistake, chance, and repetition. Pérez's photography pursuits extend to exploring techniques such as liquid emulsion and colour printing including colour transparency E6. Her artwork has found a place in prestigious collections, notably the library of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the rare book collection of Oxford University's Bodleian Library in Weston In 2017, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Photography from the London College of Communication (UAL). Currently, Pérez is engaged in a project divergent from her personal photography endeavours She serves as the director of Lakeside Darkroom, located in Thamesmead, London.
